today is the day that cannes will be announcing the line up for this season’s film festival scheduled to take place between may 11-22nd. one of this year’s concentrations involves a journey through african cinema.  the father of african cinema: ousmane sembene’s first film borom sarret (1966)  is the ‘official’ beginning of african cinema. this film shows the struggles of dakar’s poor, centered on a narrative around a senegalese cart driver who is subjected to the rules of a new regime. (side bar: i wonder if ramin bahrain was influenced by ousmane’s work, as his film ‘man push cart’ (2005) also tells the story of a pakistani cart vendor living in nyc who also struggles to get by)

the film is 20 minutes long and is considered the first ever film made in Africa by an African. it aptly signifies how independence did not liberate its people.
