south african artist robin rhode uses photography, drawing, animation, sculpture and performance to address themes of colonialism, social and economic issues, as well as youth culture. drawing upon his alter ego, buster keaton (a character reminiscent of one you would find in American minstrel shows of the 19th and early 20th centuries) uses the environment as his canvas. he creates narrative using chalk, soap, paint or charcoal on city walls, calling to mind similarities in early flip-books or silent films.

john akomfrah’s latest film, peripeteia uses the first western representations of black people by 16th century artist albrecht durer as its starting point. peripeteia, defined as a reversal of circumstances or turning point, is a haunting narrative with no dialogue. as the viewer we are drawn into a tale with no beginning or end, its harrowing silence only marked by sounds of nature. these two individuals are on an isolating journey that is undefined and left hanging in the balance, their history unknown.

on view at carroll fletcher until 8 november.

last night i attended an artist talk with painter lynette yiadom-boakye. her figurative paintings, definitely need to be viewed in the flesh so one can capture the tone, the rushed brushed strokes and the incredible texture. her current show on exhibition at the chisenhelm gallery, titled extracts and verses, is appropriate as lynette has a self-proclaimed love affair with words. she is a writer, whose prose remains complimentary yet independent of her oil paintings; yet it is her imagination that creates the narratives, environment as well as the actual characters that come to life on canvas.

for yiadom-boakye, both technique and instinct are play when she is painting, as all of her work is completed in one day. her hurried and intense strokes, allow her to trust her natural feeling, as if something is not right such as the light on the canvas or tone of the image, reworking the painting will not obtain perfection. this intense and laborious day of work also allows for between her and her subjects. the work is timeless, as there are no markers to time, place, or identifiable gender. this show is decidedly all males, who are engaged in thought or an activity. it is their simplicity that draws you in. yiadom-boakye’s influences are classical painters such as velasquez or goya, yet her work is distinctly and irrevocably her own. these paintings are meant to simply be enjoyed without any complexities or preconceived notions. her exhibition is on view at the chiselhelm gallery until 13 may.

a new exhibition will be on display at the mandeville gallery, in schenectady, ny from march 15 - may 13, 2012. 15 prominent contemporary african photographers were selected to create missionary postcards to provide a ‘starting point to trace some of the stereotypes that still prevail below the surface of our consciousness, and make us aware that by framing a culture from without, the meaning of that culture is distorted.’

these works aim to provoke discussion and thought surrounding cultural and historical assumptions about africa. featured artists include:

director khalil joseph and cinematographers bradford young and matthew j. lloyd, present a short film duo entitled ‘the model’ which was inspired by seu jorge’s album. it was filmed in a mansion in hollywood hills and stars seu jorge. i am a little late to the game as this came out over a year ago, but nonetheless very inspiring and beautiful.
